Three day songwriter festival organized by good people at Platoo took place in one of my favorite clubs, for many different reasons, Orpheum in Graz. I was there as a part of terapija.net team, but unfortunately, we were not able to come the first night, so we missed the performances of Clara Luzia, Francis International Airport and Martin Klein.
Second evening started with really cool Vienna based band Diver - with great voice and great English accent of the singer, if they didn't talk German in between the songs, I would believe that they're from UK. After them, an award-winning Irish actress (a.k.a. Queen Katherine of Aragon in the TV series The Tudors) and also a great singer with a strong and beautiful voice (and a great sense of humor!) Maria Doyle Kennedy came on the stage. Performing with her musical and life partner Kieran Kennedy, Maria took us all on amazing musical trip finishing with all of us singing with her in one song. Last band of the evening were Tunng, experimental folk band from UK, which were a bit of a revelation to see live. I mean, it wasn't like I didn't know them 'cause I really like their music, and the song "Bullets" is one of my favorite tracks in the last year or so, but to see them performing live - especially Mike Lindsay, the singer, with all his jumping and goofing - is really something special. I just hope they'll be playing on some festivals in the area next summer which would be just an ultimate experience.
Last night of the festival was opened by cool Vienna based Aber das Leben Lebt which were also singing in English, despite the German name. But the next band, Der Nino aus Wien, which was the only band singing in German language in this two days of the festival I visited, really made an impression on me. Although my German is not what it used to be when I learned it in school, cool music, fine lyrics (what I understood, of course) and great performance plus amazing contact with the audience (jokes between the songs, mainly) made their gig a really special one. And a special one was the performance of Chris Eckman's (The Walkabouts, Dirtmusic, The Strange,...) new project L/O/N/G - together with Rupert Huber (Tosca), their mix of American folk and European electronica is really quite a successful one, making their debut album "American Primitive" one of mine favorite ones in the last couple of months. What was the second gig in their career as a duo, convinced me once more what a great musicians they are.
All in all, great and cosy small festival which I already look forward to visit again next year!
